Setting the Stage: When private documents were accidentally - and not so accidentally - made public, a major insurance company found itself in the middle of a public-relations disaster, losing customers, money and face. The personal-lines insurer believed there was a lack of understanding about the importance of protecting consumer privacy and needed to quickly and efficiently educate over 30,000 employees across the United States.
Playing our Part: OK, so having private information revealed to the public isn't funny, but that doesn't mean we couldn't use a little humor to make a serious point about our client's privacy policies. With our client's help, SCC created a newsmagazine-style mockumentary featuring the true story of privacy documents being tossed in a dumpster and blown all over the street by a storm, instigating an investigation by the insurance commissioner and instant coverage by the local news media. The video served to draw people in, play up the issues in a humorous way and tee up the speaker who followed the presentation. As a bonus, because of its timeless content and format, the video can serve as a training tool for new employees.
